Exposing Engineering Data As A Strategic Asset

The Air Force SEEK EAGLE Office (AFSEO) has developed a new data lake architecture and applications that combine historical data, machine learning, and modern big data technology to accelerate complicated engineering analyses.  Before a new store (weapon, fuel tank, etc.)  is mounted on an aircraft, AFSEO is responsible for setting safe limits for flight for that store and determining the unsafe ways in which different stores can interact.  Doing so requires complicated engineering analyses and tests (flight, wind tunnel, etc.) led by PhD level engineers.  As AFSEO surpasses 50+ years of accumulated data, the promise of finding, using, and synthesizing previously approved analyses rather than building a new analysis from scratch is too large to ignore.  The data lake addresses this problem in two ways.  First, a custom data catalog has been built that tags all files with relevant metadata and then makes them searchable and filterable through a web-based UI.  This is enabled by a Dell EMC multiprotocol Isilon storage solution that simultaneously serves files to all operating systems based on users’ roles through SMB/NFS protocols and to the Cloudera based data lake as HDFS.  The custom data catalog UI is hosted and served directly by Solr, offering a number of advantages.  Second, a custom application built on Tamr machine learning searches historical documents for relevant antecedents, and in some cases, can create a "by analogy" certification without human intervention.  Both efforts help engineers certify new stores and capabilities with the agility required to support the modern-day US Air Force.

She traded in her comfortable home; The Netherlands after 30 years to live and work in the United Arab Emirates; the innovative hub of the Middle East also known as a leading GCC Countries.  As a 5 time Chief Data Officer, she is no stranger to adversity and turbulence in the corporate arena yet there was another " level of dante's hell" to address when she arrived in Abu Dhabi, just two months before the Covid Pandemic in a new sector; Aviation. 

 

Althea knows like no other the game to get attention for data and the effort to solicit attention from business leadership and management to take professional action. The business pre-Covid didn't not see or wanted to ignore the burning platform available to them to step up the data game. The Covid pandemic is the mother of invention and a whole new level of Dante's hell, Althea, because organizations are confronted with data sins of the past and the stakes get higher while you are drowning.  

 

Her insights and stories about data in high turbulence calls on applied wisdom for adoptive data strategies, for management  of shrinking skeleton teams, for cultivation of data community of practices, for holding the attention of a distracted business customer and viding for attention of line management on data monetization.

CDO Startup Plan - Collaboration Of Best Practices

The purpose of this presentation is to review the shared document to create a best-practice process by which CDO’s, who first enter an organization (in their first 90 days in the position), can have a guide which contains a blueprint of concerns, deliverables and considerations. It is intended to aide individuals in fulfilling the role of the CDO position – which it in itself a conundrum in that CDO’s can have vastly different organizational roles and responsibilities. In this presentation, attendee’s will review the initial draft of best practices being developed to aide CDO’s during their first 90 days into an organization.  Its purpose is to enable and empower CDO’s with the primary requirements of the position and establish a cadence with business decision makers.

Repeated measurements place the impact of people and process aspects of data management programs in the 90-95% range.  Technology was seen by survey respondents as only 10%.  What are the people/process aspects of day to day CDO life and why are they so important?  Ed will relate several lessons that have worked for him over the nearly five years as he has matured a large decentralized organization.  A series of project details will illustrate:

How CDOs Succeed: Accelerating Migrations with Metadata Automation & Analytics

Data silos are technical bottlenecks that cost money and derail business. To produce corporate value from their data, organizations must replace their technical architectures to migrate data to new and more efficient systems. Migrating data is not a trivial matter, however. Migrations require a plan based on a solid understanding of the legacy systems. But some systems are very old and not well documented, especially the system dependencies. Consequently, developing a migration plan is slow and hard work. Frustrated and pressured by corporate demands, people often take shortcuts in the migration plans. Those detours create inaccurate, non-auditable, non-repeatable, and outdated outcomes when they are finished.

As nations, states and businesses of all sizes look to use data and analytics in developing and improving their response to COVID 19 the isCDO looks at the role of data leaders in leading the use of data to design and improve how we can safely get out of lockdown and back to work.  We will examine the benefits to be gained from the use of data and the possible problems that might limit the effectiveness of the use or which might impinge upon the privacy and freedoms of individuals.

 

Contact tracing in its various forms has variously been put forward variously as the risk-free route to a post COVID19 world on one extreme, on the other extreme as a back door to a dystopian surveillance state and all permutations in between.  Its application at national, state/province or local government level and even by businesses raises a number of questions on the ethics of what is being done and highlights a number of privacy issues.  The panel will examine if and why the ethical and privacy questions may or can be ignored and what the implications could be for individual privacy and freedom in the future.  

 

It is for Data Leaders in their many guises to have the lead role in advising organisations at every level how they can use data, what the implications might be and how best to avoid the potential pitfalls.  Getting it right will mean organisations being able to negotiate their way around the lockdown measures as they are relaxed, getting it wrong could mean fines or even prison on top of a disgruntled population/workforce who will not cooperate and all that may imply.

What a Chief Data Officer should know about Controlled Unclassified Information.  This will cover (very briefly) the history of protection of sensitive unclassified information in the executive branch and the need for reform. As well as an overview of the policy, requirements, and the philosophy behind them.  Next is a review of the standards for protecting and marking CUI as well as how these standards will be extended through contracts and agreements. The use of NIST SP-800-171 will be covered in depth as well as notes on implementation of NIST SP 800-171 and compliance oversight. 

For organizations that are creating this role or for new CDOs, this special webcast will review key reasons for the creation of office of the CDO and what support is required for the CDO Role. We will highlight internal and external roadblocks, potential failure points and how organizations can avoid these issues.   We look forward to reviewing how the CDO Role is addressing the many opportunities and responsibilities that arise for this position.

This session will focus on real life examples of data science and AI that have gone bad and what to do about it if you find yourself facing the same situations.

ABSTRACT:  When the concept of IT leadership was introduced in the late 1970’s, the title CIO was often referenced as career is over. Ambiguity, imprecision and confusion surrounded the role and even today CIO tenure is closer to four years as opposed to similarly positioned CFOs whose tenure three times as long. 

 

Unfortunately, it appears that the CDO role is at similarly prone to confusion, imprecision, and ambiguity. In some sectors, a fair percentage of CDOs seem not to be successful – failing after their initial year. This webinar will provide a summary of the worldwide state of commercial and public CDOs. In keeping with the societal goals of:
